Directed Donation Program
When ordered by a physician, patients may specify their own donors for an expected transfusion. The donor must meet CBC, FDA and medical criteria to ensure safety of the blood supply and the donor. The requirements of directed donors are the same as volunteer donors which includes: 1) a minimum of 16 years of age, 2) a weight of at least 115 pounds, 3) hemoglobin of 12.5 or greater and 4) no high risk behavior.
To arrange a directed donation, the patient's attending physician should contact Community Blood Center's Special Donations Office with orders. The patient is then contacted to provide a list of donors. Directed donations should be scheduled no later than seven working days prior to the patient's blood transfusion; these donations cannot be drawn on an emergency basis. For more information, contact the Special Donations Office at (816) 968-4081 in Kansas City and in Topeka, KS at (785) 233-0195.
